Thanks to Your Voices, Solar is Protected

We reached a deal with FirstEnergy to protect the future of solar energy in West Virginia.

The Public Service Commission approved a deal that will give homeowners in MonPower and Potomac Edison through the end of the year to decide to go solar and still receive full one to one net metering rates. A deal that ensures expanding your system later or leaving it to your children or adding batteries won’t impact your rate. It’s guaranteed for the next 25 years. The decision also ensures that rates for future customers are supported by facts and math instead of the whims of the utility and that all solar is credited fairly, whether it’s on the roof of a home, a school, a church, or an office building. This decision levels the playing field like never before.

Below are more details of this final decision:

Existing Solar Customers

Existing Solar Customers

Existing Solar Customers

  • Existing solar customers keep one to one net metering for the next 25 years.
  • Even if you sell your house, the system will be grandfathered, meaning the new owners will still get one to one net metering.
  • If you install batteries at any time in those 25 years, that will not impact the net metering rate.
  • If you expand your system up to 10% or 1 kW (whichever is greater), you will still receive the same net metering rate.

  • Future customers will qualify for full one to one net metering as long as they apply for interconnection on or before December 31, 2024. If you are installing solar on your home (residential systems), the system must be installed by December 31, 2025. If you are installing a system on your business, farm, or church (commercial systems), the system must be installed by June 30, 2026.
  • Future customers (residential or commercial) that apply for interconnection on or after January 1, 2025 will receive the new rate of $.09343 for excess energy produced.
